Turning the Tide

On the 6 June 1944 a huge invasion force set out under cover of darkness bound for the beaches of Normandy. With Europe gripped by Nazism, failure wasn’t an option. On the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings we retell the story of the largest amphibious assault in military history; the day that turned the tide of the Second World War.

Inspired by military maps and period artwork, Royal Mint graphic designer Stephen Taylor captures the significance and scale of the operation on this commemorative £2 coin – recognising the campaign planning and courage under fire that helped to make D-Day possible. Struck in 22 carat gold and finished to finest Proof standard, this monumental story is beautifully etched in miniature.
