The obverse design features a rendition of Augustus Saint-Gaudens' full-length figure of Lady Liberty with flowing hair, wearing an American flag with the sun rising behind her. The reverse design, features an Eagle and Shield, as created by John Mercanti. The reverse also features 13 stars representing the original colonies of America.
