The Legacies of the Endeavour Voyage
When Captain James Cook set sail aboard HM Bark Endeavour 250 years ago, his main objective was to observe the Transit of Venus from Tahiti. However, he also carried a second set of orders in a sealed envelope which set him and his crew on a far longer journey of discovery spanning three years. The legacies of the Endeavour voyage are felt to this day in early records of the people, places and plants that shaped the way we see the world. On the 250th anniversary of Captain Cook’s adventures, we invite you to join The Royal Mint and Royal Mail as we mark this historic moment with a coin and stamp set.
The fully illustrated pack features fascinating imagery of drawings and curiosities captured along the journey, plus details of each phase of the groundbreaking voyage. With a dated handstamp tying the stamps to the cover, this set contains six illustrated stamps exclusive to Royal Mail and a UK £2 coin struck to Brilliant Uncirculated standard. The coin carries an intriguing design by sculptor Gary Breeze, which will ultimately combine with a further two releases in the coming years to create a single, complete image that tells the story of Captain Cook’s three-year voyage.
