Unleashing the latest beast in our new royal series
The Unicorn of Scotland was one of the ten beasts that symbolically guarded the entrance to Her Majesty The Queen’s coronation in 1953. The mystical beast is a familiar symbol that appears as a supporter of the United Kingdom’s Royal Arms, along with the Lion of England. The pair can be seen on monuments and signage all over the country, but are probably most familiar on British Passports – embossed in gold and recognised as an official emblem across the world.
The Unicorn of Scotland is said to stand for strength and beauty, and Royal Mint coin designer Jody Clark has created a design that conveys these qualities. His contemporary interpretation of the Unicorn features on this five-ounce coin, struck in 999 fine silver and finished to Proof standard. The coin is presented in a Royal Mint case and comes with a booklet produced in association with Clive Cheesman, Richmond Herald at the College of Arms.
