The silver Piedfort coin – a noble tribute to the brave

The Royal Mint has a long-standing tradition of honouring servicemen and women, producing many of the medals that are awarded for service in the armed forces. Numerous Royal Mint employees lost their lives during the World Wars and some staff members in active service were even awarded medals made by their own colleagues. This is the first time the Remembrance Day coin from The Royal Mint has been struck on an official United Kingdom £5 coin, as it has traditionally appeared on an Alderney coin. The reverse design was created by Royal Mint graphic designer Stephen Taylor, whose realistic poppies are highlighted in the coin’s vibrant colour printing. Just 1500 silver Proof Piedfort coins will be issued, struck in double the thickness of 925 sterling silver as the silver Proof coin. A donation from each coin purchased will be made to Imperial War Museums to help them continue their important work.
