The Emblem of a Nation

A Celebratory Edition Struck on Six Fine Silver Coins

Britannia is an enduring symbol of the nation, reflecting the spirit of heritage, strength and progress that Britain identifies with. Throughout changes in art, politics, technology, and popular culture, she has provided different meaning throughout the ages and outlasted passing trends. Her popularity with the public has made her one of the oldest and most recognisable emblems of Britain, where she has been adopted on signs and monuments throughout the United Kingdom. While firmly rooted in the times of the Romans, a modern Britannia has emerged, appearing as a symbol of design excellence in high fashion magazines and associated with all things fashionable during the ‘Cool Britannia’ phase in the 1990s.

Central Saint Martins student Louis Tamlyn has designed a modern Britannia that celebrates 20 years of the silver Britannia bullion coin. For this milestone, each coin in the set features the anniversary trident mint mark with the number 20, which will only feature on the coin in 2017. Struck in 999 fine silver and finished to Proof standard, this is the only silver set in the range, and it contains: the Britannia 2017 One-Ounce, Half-Ounce, Quarter-Ounce, Tenth-Ounce, Twentieth-Ounce and Fortieth-Ounce silver coins. There are 2,500 limited edition sets available, each accompanied by a booklet revealing more on the fascinating history of Britannia and the young designer’s inspiration.
