1066 – the date that made history

Commemorate 950 years since the battle with this silver Proof 50p coin

After the death of Edward the Confessor, crisis and conflict loomed. King Harold’s position was precarious and the threat of invasion hung in the air. It wouldn't be long before rival claimants to the English throne would mobilise their forces in a bid to seize the crown. William, Duke of Normandy, a cousin of the previous king, landed his army in England backed by a claim that both Edward and Harold had promised him the crown. Harold marched south to meet him – ultimately to death and defeat. 2016 is a significant year for British history as we remember a host of landmark moments, perhaps none more deeply ingrained in the national psyche than the anniversary of 1066.

To mark 950 years since the Battle of Hastings, The Royal Mint has once again turned to experienced coinage artist, John Bergdahl. The artist's medieval composition expertly captures the essence of the period. Struck in 925 sterling silver and minted to our finest Proof standard, this elegant 50p coin is a fitting way to mark such a significant landmark moment in the story of our nation.
