The Royal Mint, the UK’s home of precious metals, has today unveiled a new minted bullion bar range, which celebrates and marks the anniversary of His Majesty King Charles III’s accession to the British throne. It’s the first bullion bar to represent His Majesty King Charles III.
Each bar features His Majesty King Charles ’s royal cypher and an intricate reverse design depicting the four heraldic beasts of the United Kingdom.
The Royal Cypher design comprises an interlocking C and R with ‘III’ enclosed within the text. Each letter in the cypher represents his Majesty’s reign: C for Charles, R for Rex – which means ‘King’ in Latin and the ‘III’ represents the third Carolean era. The cypher also pays tribute to George V1, King Charles III’s grandfather, with His Majesty’s monogram featuring the Tudor crown, also worn by his grandfather.
The other design, created by Thomas T Docherty, is an intricate, heraldic design featuring symbols and flowers of the United Kingdom, surrounded by the Tudor crown in the centre. The crowned Lion of England, The Unicorn of Scotland, the Dragon of Wales and the Elk of Northern Ireland all feature on the bar.
With each bullion bar available in limited mintages - 5,000 1oz gold editions, 70,000 1oz silver editions and 6,000 10oz silver editions - they are expected to prove popular with both collectors and investors. They are securely packaged, featuring unique serial numbers.
Andrew Dickey, Director of Precious Metals at The Royal Mint, said: “We’re so excited to launch the Royal Celebration Bullion Bars. They’re unique in their exclusive design and minted in 1oz fine gold and 1oz and 10oz fine silver editions. I’ve no doubt they’ll be popular amongst collectors and investors, not least due to their limited mintages.
“These celebration bullion bars – as with all bullion products produced by The Royal Mint – are a combination of exceptional design and skilled craftsmanship; upholding the standards of quality and accuracy that you’d expect from a world-leading mint.”
Designer, Thomas T Docherty, said: “It was interesting to work on the design of these unique Royal Celebration Bullion Bars, capturing years of history in one design. We brought together the four traditional heraldic beasts of the United Kingdom with their respective native flowers, creating a design that will resonate with customers from the UK and beyond. The inclusion of a central cross was inspired by historical coinage, adding a touch of historical significance to the product.
“I’ve worked at The Royal Mint for 19 years and it’s an honour to be a part of creating this design, celebrating the anniversary of His Majesty King Charles III’s ascension to the throne. It’s been particularly engaging for me working on this bar, with its shape offering new design principles to work within.”
His Majesty King Charles III ascended to the British throne on Thursday 8 September 2022, and was formally proclaimed King on Saturday 10 September 2022.
The Royal Celebration Bullion Bars are available to purchase from 22 September 2023 at www.royalmint.com
