15th September 2025: The Royal Mint has rolled the dice on nostalgia, announcing a collectible 50p coin to celebrate nine decades of the world's most famous property trading game – MONOPOLY, in collaboration with leading games, IP and toy company Hasbro.
The commemorative coin captures all the classic elements that have made MONOPOLY a household name since 1935, featuring the beloved game tokens, property cards, and other instantly recognisable symbols from the board including Mr. Monopoly himself. The real showstopper is the innovative lenticular feature on the GO sign, which transitions to reveal the iconic M money symbol.
For the first time in history, the beloved board game that has entertained families for 90 years gets its own official UK coin and marks the first time a board game has been celebrated on coin. MONOPOLY remains the world's most printed 'currency' with over 275 million games having been sold globally, and an estimated 1 billion people having played the property trading game that's been translated into 47 languages.
Rebecca Morgan, Director of Commemorative Coin at The Royal Mint, said: "We're thrilled to honour this iconic game that has brought families together for nine decades. For nearly 90 years, families have been trading millions in MONOPOLY currency around kitchen tables, and now we're celebrating that beloved tradition with this collectible coin. We anticipate collectors, whether passionate about Monopoly or coins, will treasure this as a unique addition to their collections.”
One person who is particularly keen to add the coin to his already impressive MONOPOLY collection is Neil Scallan. As the Guinness World Record holder for the world's largest MONOPOLY collection, Neil was given a sneak preview of the coin and couldn't contain his excitement about this historic addition to the MONOPOLY universe.
Neil, the world’s largest collector of MONOPOLY Memorabilia said, “As someone who's spent years collecting different editions of MONOPOLY, from the original Waddingtons version to the latest themed sets, this 50p coin is the ultimate addition to any collection. It's like finding a 'Get Out of Jail Free' card, that celebrates the game we all grew up loving. This represents the holy grail for any serious MONOPOLY enthusiast!"

Marianne James, Senior Vice President, Global Licensing at Hasbro said, “MONOPOLY has been part of family life for 90 years, creating unforgettable memories around the table for generations. To see the brand celebrated on an official UK coin is a truly special milestone, and we’re delighted to partner with The Royal Mint to bring this to life. This collaboration reflects MONOPOLY’s unique place in British culture and its enduring global appeal - and we can’t wait for fans and collectors alike to add this piece of history to their collections.”
The coin celebrates a game that has evolved from "The Landlord's Game", created in the early 1900s by Lizzie Magie and inspired by the economic theories of Henry George. While the game later evolved into MONOPOLY as we know it today, Magie’s invention laid the foundation for what became a global gaming phenomenon. Since its official introduction in 1935, the game has become a timeless classic associated with family fun, particularly during the festive season. As the most printed 'currency' on the planet, MONOPOLY money has become a globally recognised currency, making this official recognition long overdue.
This Thursday (18.09), The Royal Mint is celebrating the launch of the new commemorative 50p by inviting people to join the Ultimate MONOPOLY UK Coin Hunt. Spot the giant silver Top Hat roaming the streets of London, snap a photo, and share it online using #Monopoly50p for your chance to win one of 100 limited edition coins. The commemorative coin will be available to purchase from The Royal Mint's website on 15th September, with prices starting from £15 for the Brilliant Uncirculated edition. Other versions of the coin will also be available in silver and gold
To further celebrate the launch of the MONOPOLY 50p, The Royal Mint has hidden a solid gold coin, worth £1,730, behind door 24 in one limited-edition MONOPOLY advent calendar, offering one customer the chance of striking gold on Christmas Eve.
From 30th September visitors to the Royal Mint Experience, based in Llantrisant, South Wales will have an opportunity to strike their own MONOPOLY 50p coin. This 50p coin will feature a different and more simplified design that heroes Mr. Monopoly leaping over the GO sign, designed by Royal Mint Coin Designer, Emma Noble.
