  • Six suspects, one coin. All of Cluedo's original characters feature on the latest collectable 50p, with select editions carrying hidden features.
  • Cluedo stage play actress Ellie Leach revealed the design as Miss Scarlett alongside Marcia Lewis, daughter of the iconic boardgame's creator.
  • The nation is invited to become amateur detectives in The Case of the Missing Coin, a three-week online mystery with a Gold 50p coin up for grabs worth over £2,000.

The Royal Mint is inviting the nation to become detectives as it launches a new collectable Cluedo 50p coin, marking 100 years since the first Cluedo crime – the mystery that inspired the world's best-loved whodunnit – produced in collaboration with Hasbro, a leading games, IP and toy company.

The Cluedo 50p, available from today, 28 September 2026, has been unveiled by actress and Strictly Come Dancing champion Ellie Leach, who played Miss Scarlett in the stage show Cluedo 2, alongside Marcia Lewis, daughter of the boardgame's creator.

The coin’s design brings Miss Scarlett to life alongside the game’s five other iconic suspects – Colonel Mustard, Professor Plum, Mrs Peacock, Reverend Green and Mrs White – with select editions featuring the famous character colours synonymous with the game.

The design also nods to the tool familiar to generations of Cluedo players, the magnifying glass. Just as players use it to examine clues and unmask the culprit, members of the public can do the same with the coin itself. Hidden within the design is intricate hidden microtext naming the game's classic characters, locations and weapons visible with the help of a magnifying glass. This detail transforms the coin into a piece of detective work, encouraging collectors to look closer, just as generations of Cluedo players have done at the kitchen table.

To mark the milestone, The Royal Mint is inviting amateur detectives to solve The Case of the Missing Coin, an online competition for one supersleuth to win a solid gold Cluedo 50p.

Tim Mulhall, Head of Fandom at The Royal Mint, comments: "Every coin we create tells a story, and the Cluedo 50p is no exception. Cluedo has captivated millions of players for decades, and we've channelled that spirit of mystery and intrigue into every detail of the design.

"We hope members of the public enjoy cracking the case of ‘The Missing Coin’ as much as we've enjoyed bringing the coin to life. There's a real thrill to coin collecting, and we hope solving this case connects that same passion for collecting with the mystery and excitement of a game like Cluedo."

Marcia Lewis, daughter of Anthony Pratt, the creator behind Cluedo said, “My father invented the game at his home in Birmingham during the long nights under blackout in the Second World War, while my mother, Elva, designed the board. Produced by British manufacturers Waddingtons, Cluedo made its first appearance in the shops in 1949. Now, it's become part of national culture and family life right across the world, so to see his creation immortalised on this UK 50p coin is truly special. I love that the iconic, original 1940s characters feature so strikingly in the design, and that the casing depicts the traditional board and pieces generations have grown up with. It's a beautiful tribute to the game my father brought to life.

Visiting The Royal Mint to strike my own coin and to see the range of skills, craftsmanship and minute attention to detail that went into its production was a moment I will always cherish and one I know my parents would have too. Cluedo has brought entertainment, escapism and delight to hundreds of millions of people and I’m immensely proud to know my father’s legacy, so cleverly represented in this coin, will now be treasured by collectors and families for many years to come.”

Ellie Leach added: “Playing Miss Scarlett on stage was one of my favourite roles, so getting to bring her back to life for The Royal Mint was such a fun challenge – except this time, I ended up as the victim of the crime rather than solving it!

“Holding the coin for the first time was such a special moment, and I love how much detail has been included in the design. I can’t wait for everyone to get involved and see if they can crack the case.”

Marianne James, Senior Vice President, Global Licensing at Hasbro, added: “ At Hasbro, we’re focused on finding new and meaningful ways for fans to experience our iconic brands, and this collaboration with The Royal Mint is a wonderful example of that. Cluedo has brought generations together through mystery, strategy and play, and this thoughtfully designed coin gives fans and collectors an entirely new way to engage with the brand.”

Starting today, a new clue will drop each week on The Royal Mint's website and social channels, challenging fans to uncover the who, the where and the what: the suspect, the location and the coin type.

Anyone who cracks all three clues will be entered into a prize draw for the chance to win a Cluedo Gold 50p coin worth over £2,000. The winner will be revealed once the case closes on 19 October.

Cluedo has captivated detectives of all ages since it was invented in 1949 by Anthony Pratt, quickly becoming one of the world's best-loved board games. Nearly a century since its first fictional murder, Cluedo remains a household favourite, played by millions of families worldwide.

The Cluedo collectable 50p coin will be available to purchase from The Royal Mint's website at 9am 28th September, with prices starting from £19.95. Other versions of the coin will also be available in silver and gold.

From 6th October visitors to the Royal Mint Experience, based in Llantrisant, South Wales will have an opportunity to strike their own Cluedo 50p coin. This 50p coin will feature a different and more simplified design depicting a magnifying glass set against the iconic game board designed by Royal Mint Coin Designer, Emma Noble.
