The Sovereign has been a constant in our coinage for more than 200 years. With a reputation for accuracy and quality, it is one of the most recognised coins in the world, partly thanks to The Sovereign’s classic reverse design, Benedetto Pistrucci’s St George and the dragon, which has become a symbol of excellence.
Since 2026, The Sovereign has been struck in traditional yellow gold, as it was for centuries, but it also has an eye on the future, and some editions in the 2027 collection include intricate changes.
Made with Recycled Gold
For the very first time, every Sovereign and fractional Sovereign in our 2027 commemorative range has been struck in recycled gold as part of our commitment to a sustainable future. If recovered and refined from existing sources, rather than newly mined, gold can be recycled infinitely without any degradation to its quality, purity or value, and The Sovereign 2027 meets the same rigorous standards as ever.
Reverse Frosting
Traditionally, Proof editions of The Sovereign are struck with a mirrored background but a raised, frosted design. For 2027, a limited number of Sovereigns are available on general release featuring reverse frosting for the first time. The field of the coin is frosted, whilst Pistrucci’s masterpiece shines through with a gleaming polished finish.
Intricate Security Features
In 2026, new features were added to both sides of the bullion Sovereign, ensuring that the ‘chief coin of the world’ remains secure. On the obverse, just below the portrait of His Majesty King Charles III, there is a latent image that acts like a hologram, alternating between the Tudor Crown and the Tudor Rose. The reverse design carries a half-tone pattern along with micro-text that forms the inscription ‘HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE’, the motto of the Order of the Garter.
The Silver Sovereign Returns
Very rarely have we struck The Sovereign in anything other than its signature gold. For just the third time in history, the 2027 Sovereign Collection includes a coin struck in silver, making The Silver Sovereign the perfect gift or collector’s piece.
