Can I spend or exchange older commemorative £2 coins?
Before the current bi-metallic £2 coin entered general circulation, The Royal Mint issued a number of single-colour commemorative £2 coins between 1986 and 1996. These were produced to mark special occasions rather than for everyday circulation.
These commemorative £2 coins are legal tender. However, this does not mean that banks or retailers are required to accept them.
If you would like to deposit or exchange a commemorative £2 coin, we recommend checking with your bank before visiting a branch.
