23rd November:

The Royal Mint, official maker of UK coins, will host its largest auction to date, offering some of most sought-after coins by collectors – including a gold proof Kew Gardens 50p, which is anticipated to sell in excess of its £5,000 - £6,000 estimate.

The Royal Mint’s Auction will be open until 20:00 3rd December, and collectors will have the opportunity to bid for a number of highly collectable coins such as a 1 kilo Queen’s Beasts Completer gold coin and the 2009 Kew Gardens gold 50p.

The Queen’s Beasts 1 kilo coin pays homage to Queen Elizabeth II and features the ten beasts’ side by side in a single design. The coin design takes its inspiration from the ten stone statues which lined Her Majesty’s route to Westminster Abbey at her Coronation in 1953. Only 16 coins were minted for this specific coin in The Royal Mint’s auction, making it extremely sought after among collectors.

The Kew Gardens 50p is one of the most sought-after coins among collectors due to its scarcity in circulation and as a commemorative coin. The coin features a design celebrating the nation’s most famous royal botanical garden, depicting the famous Chinese Pagoda at Kew with a decorative leafy climber twining in and around the tower. A total of 629 Kew Garden gold proof 50p coins were minted in 2009, making it a popular coin within the coin collecting community.

With over 300 lots up for sale, each coin as part of The Royal Mint’s latest auction has been authenticated and valuated by an inhouse team of numismatic experts.
