Her Majesty The Queen acceded to the throne on 6 February 1952, a date that will always be tinged with sadness as it is the day her father, George VI, passed away. It placed a young, private princess into the spotlight, while beginning a period of respectful mourning that also allowed for preparations to be made for her coronation. 16 months later, 2 June 1953 was a day full of colour and celebration, a ray of light that seemed to illuminate the shift from post-war austerity to a new era of optimism.

The 65th anniversary of this significant chapter in the story of our monarchy deserves a fitting celebration, and a piedfort coin is perfect for the occasion. Once the preferred gift of royalty to esteemed guests, today these double-thickness coins are issued to celebrate important occasions. Struck in sterling silver, the coin’s Proof finish enhances every detail of the Royal Standard, which forms the focus of Royal Mint graphic designer Stephen Taylor’s exclusive new design. Just 1,953 coins are available, each presented in a Royal Mint case with a booklet that reveals more on the story of the coronation and Stephen Taylor’s design.
