The Last Year of the ‘Great War’

This set of six £5 coins struck in 916.7 Au – Red Gold continues The Royal Mint’s five-year programme of commemoration of the First World War, telling the stories of the war from outbreak to armistice.

This penultimate set in the series details key moments in those final months of the war. Two coins mark the women left behind – in factories and as grieving widows. The tank was selected as a symbol of the technological advances of wartime and a bi-plane embodies the role of the newly-formed Royal Air Force. T. E. Lawrence, the famous Lawrence of Arabia, is celebrated as a hero of the time and a poignant design honours those fallen at the battles of Ypres.
