6 November:

The Royal Mint, official maker of UK coins, has unveiled a new commemorative coin celebrating King Charles III's 75th Birthday. To mark the occasion, The Royal Mint is looking for 75 people turning 75 years old this year to gift them a special £5 in honour of His Majesty’s Birthday.

His Majesty will celebrate his 75th birthday on 14 November 2023. The special £5 coin marking the occasion has been designed by Daniel Thorne at The Royal Mint and pays tribute to His Majesty’s passions and interests. The commemorative coin features The King’s royal cypher and the number 75 at the centre of the design and is framed within oak leaves and delphiniums. The oak leaves represent strength, morale, resistance and knowledge, whilst His Majesty’s favourite garden flower – the delphinium – reflects his love of nature.

Modelled as a stone-cut effect to represent The King’s support of the crafts, the ‘75’ was drawn by hand. On closer inspection several insects such as the ladybird and a dragonfly feature as part of the coin design. The words ‘RESTORING HARMONY WITH NATURE’ appear as the edge inscription around the precious metal edition of the coin, which are extracts from a speech by His Majesty when he was HRH The Prince of Wales to open Climate Week, September 2020.

In celebration of King Charles III’s 75th birthday, The Royal Mint will gift a commemorative coin to 75 individuals turning 75 years old this year. Anyone celebrating their 75th birthday in 2023 can submit their name and contact details via The Royal Mint to be in with a chance of receiving a Brilliant Uncirculated £5 commemorative coin. The winners will be drawn at random and asked to provide photographic evidence of age.

Rebecca Morgan, Director of Commemorative Coin at The Royal Mint said “The Royal Mint has been celebrating and commemorating Royal occasions, birthdays, and anniversaries on UK coins for centuries. We are delighted to continue this tradition by unveiling a special commemorative coin to celebrate His Majesty King Charles III’s 75th birthday – His Majesty’s first birthday as a crowned British monarch.

“For The King’s 75th birthday, The Royal Mint has developed a design which pays tribute to His Majesty’s passion for the natural world and commitment to conservation. To mark this milestone birthday, we are thrilled to offer 75 people also turning 75 this year the chance to receive a special commemorative coin.”

To mark His Majesty The King’s milestone 75th birthday on 14 November 2023, The Royal Mint has also struck a special half-ounce silver Proof coin. Made from a blend of silver recovered from industrial and medical X-ray films. The unique approach taken to produce this coin is another step in The Royal Mint’s journey to become a world leader in sustainable precious metals.

The Royal Mint will be contacting the 75 winners via email from early December 2023.
