  • The Royal Mint Experience hosted a homecoming medal presentation for Team Wales as they return from the Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago.
  • The Commemorative Participation medals which were presented were struck by The Royal Mint in Llantrisant, South Wales.
  • Dawn Bowden MS (Deputy Minister for Arts, Sport, and Tourism) was in attendance.
  • Team Wales finished 9th on the medal table, out of 71 countries across the Commonwealth.
  • The 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games were the first to be held since the accession of His Majesty King Charles III as Head of the Commonwealth.

Monday 4th September 2023:

The Royal Mint Experience, in Llantrisant, South Wales, hosted a homecoming medal presentation for Team Wales as they return from the Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago.

The Royal Mint struck the Commemorative Participation medals which were presented. Drawing on its1,100-year history of traditional British craftmanship, The Royal Mint has brought the Commonwealth Games Federation and Trinbago 2023 together with a considered design. The Commemorative Participation medals feature the Commonwealth Sport Celebration mark in Trinidad and Tobago colours alongside a thumbprint, which symbolises how digital innovation and flexibility of use have become part of our daily lives through smart devices

The athletes, their families and friends visited The Royal Mint Experience celebrate their successes at Trinbago 2023, which was held between 4th August and 11th August 2023. Dawn Bowden MS (Deputy Minister for Arts, Sport, and Tourism) also attended to present Team Wales with their medals alongside Rebecca Morgan, Director of Commemorative Coin at The Royal Mint.

Team Wales proudly represented their nation in four sports at the Commonwealth Youth Games: Athletics, Cycling, Swimming and Women’s Rugby Sevens. The team finished 9th on the medal table, out of 71 countries across the Commonwealth and won a total of 15 medals across three sports (Athletics, Cycling and Swimming).

Dan Johnson, Visitor Attraction Manager at The Royal Mint Experience said: “We are delighted to be the official partner of Team Wales and to have struck the medals which were presented at today’s homecoming ceremony.

At The Royal Mint, we have been responsible for commemorating key historic events for the entirety of our 1,100-year history, and it is a pleasure to be able to celebrate the successes of Team Wales today.”

Rebecca Morgan, Director of Commemorative Coin at The Royal Mint said: The Royal Mint Experience is delighted to host today’s event welcoming the Team Wales athlete’s home. We also struck the medals here on site, a great example of the craftsmanship we are known for.

The 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games were the first to be held since the accession of His Majesty King Charles III as Head of the Commonwealth. The Royal Mint Experience has been central to telling the story of the change of monarch, and sharing information with the public, with visitors being able to see the first circulating coins featuring King Charles III being struck.
