Coins struck by The Royal Mint are synonymous with Britain, a piece of the nation’s history that could be yours to keep
The Annual Sets from The Royal Mint bring together not only the coins of the year, but also the inspiration behind their designs, all created by the very best of artists and perfected by our craftsmen. The coins of every important occasion and commemoration are presented together for posterity and safekeeping. For 2016 the commemorative editions celebrate the greatest playwright of them all, William Shakespeare, and the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings. We also commemorate the spirit of the Pals’ Battalions within the Army as part of our First World War centenary series, we mark the 350th anniversary of The Great Fire of London and we bid The Queen a very happy 90th birthday. You can enjoy minting tales and learn more about the inspiration behind our designs.
This is an important year for the discerning collector – the sets for 2016 will be the last to feature the round £1 coin, a mainstay of circulating coinage since its introduction in 1983. And of course, the sets will also feature the new fifth portrait of The Queen by Royal Mint engraver Jody Clark.
