As the niece and only surviving heir of William IV, Queen Victoria acceded to the throne at the age of 18. The Victorian era was a period of significant change that has had a lasting impact on the modern Britain of today.
First introduced during Queen Victoria’s reign, the florin was an early attempt at decimalisation. At first it was thought that this new coin, which had a value of 1/10 of a pound, would render the half-crown redundant. Following decimalisation, the florin was redenominated as a 10p coin for a period of time.
This coin is also available as part of The Making of Modern Britain Queen Victoria Bundle, which offers collectors the opportunity to own an example of each of the circulating coins of Queen Victoria’s reign.
