The standard coin of most common everyday use in England from Anglo-Saxon times right up to the modern period has been the Penny, and has existed in various shape and form for circa 1,400 years. The Short Cross Penny was issued from 1180 in the reign of King Henry II (1154-89) until 1247 in the reign of King Henry III (1216-72), a total of 67 years for this coin type.
