The end of a golden era

By 1915 the euphoric nationalism that greeted the outbreak of the First World War became a distant memory. Predictions that it would all be over by Christmas gave way to a new grim reality – trench warfare. This was conflict on an industrial scale and tactics hadn’t kept pace. With each side unable to outflank the other, they dug themselves into defensive positions. Attempts to break through the enemy line would ultimately prove futile.

This 1915 gold Sovereign recalls a crucial year of the conflict: the bravery of Anzac troops at Gallipoli, and the Battle of Loos – a bid by Allied commanders to remobilise a war bogged-down in the mud of Northern France.

The coin features Benedetto Pistrucci’s classic St George and the dragon design while the portrait of George V by Bertram Mackennal adorns the obverse.
