The Sovereign 1992

In 1992, history was made as the Maastricht Treaty was signed creating the European Union, crowds roared at Wembley Stadium at The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert, and the Summer Olympics took place in Barcelona. Back in the United Kingdom, a fire caused millions of pounds of damage to Windsor Castle, prompting Her Majesty The Queen's memorable 'annus horribilis' speech. This original Sovereign, struck during such an eventful year, bears the familiar St George and the dragon reverse design by master engraver Benedetto Pistrucci, and the third circulating coinage portrait of The Queen by Raphael Maklouf on its obverse.
