Mark the centenary of the end of the First World War

By 1918, The First World War had all but put paid to domestic Sovereign production. Circulating editions had been requisitioned by the Government to bolster the nation’s finances but not before profiteers seized their chance to melt many of these Sovereigns down. The era of gold coinage was coming to an end as the ‘chief coin of the world’ gave way to banknotes for use in everyday transactions. However, in branch mints around the world, limited batches were struck.

In 1918 Sovereigns were manufactured in five branch mints: Sydney, Melbourne and Perth in Australia, Bombay in India, and Ottawa in Canada. Distinguished by their own unique mint mark beneath Benedetto Pistrucci’s classic St George and the dragon design, they feature the portrait of George V by Bertram Mackennal on the obverse.
