The birth of the Edwardian era

At the turn of the century one era gave way to another. On his mother’s death in 1901, Edward VII ascended the throne after the second longest reign in British history. Charming and sociable, he was hugely popular with the public and a natural diplomat on the world stage.

His reign coincided with a period of great social and technological change, the king himself helping to usher in a series of military reforms to the British Home Fleet and the army. The first true constitutional monarch, he reinstated many of the public ceremonies his mother had done away with and was an enthusiastic patron of the arts and science.

This 1902 gold Sovereign dates from the year of Edward’s coronation. Most of these coins remained in circulation until the end of the First World War, so few examples survive without serious signs of wear. Carefully sourced by our in-house experts, this Sovereign is offered in ‘Very Fine’ condition – a beautiful historic coin that recalls the birth of the Edwardian era.
