The Salvation Army

William Booth’s upbringing was one tinged by hardship, but arriving in London, the pawnbroker turned preacher was shocked by what he saw. Fuelled by a desire to alleviate the suffering he witnessed, he sought to bring ‘soup, soap and salvation’ to the destitute and starving in the slums of the East End; and so, in 1865, The Salvation Army was conceived; a movement that would bring hope to many, put an end to needless suffering and help people to reclaim their lives.
