A Remarkable Reign: 65 Years of Duty and Devotion
A royal year of celebration in 2018 continues with a very important anniversary. Having become our longest reigning monarch in 2015 and celebrating her 90th birthday in 2016, the remarkable reign of Her Majesty The Queen presents another historic milestone as we mark the 65th anniversary of her coronation.
Queen Elizabeth II is the first British monarch to reach such a milestone, and the occasion demands a fitting celebration. Two designs and a limited edition range of coins have been created especially for the occasion, available in versions from a Brilliant Uncirculated £5 coin to a gold Proof kilo coin.
Celebrate a Historic Moment with the Most Exclusive Coin in the Sapphire Coronation Collection
65 years ago, 8,000 guests at Westminster Abbey witnessed the coronation of Her Majesty The Queen. Millions more watched the occasion on television, the first time that this sacred and previously secret ceremony had been broadcast. It is estimated that some 3 million people gathered in the rain on the streets of London to wave the procession from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey and back again. And this was a global event, with commentary delivered in nearly 40 different languages. Even in today’s mass-media age of shared experiences of international events, the scale of the public interest in The Queen’s coronation was incredible.
Today, the once private princess has become the world’s most recognised great-grandmother as we celebrate the longest reign in British history with the UK’s most awe-inspiring coin. The largest coin in the range, struck in one kilo of 999 fine gold, it forms a 100mm showcase for a new design that has The Queen at its heart. Royal Mint graphic designer Dominique Evans has depicted the then new monarch seated under the vaulted ceiling of Westminster Abbey, crowned and holding the symbolic orb and sceptre, every detail of the iconic design emphasised by the coin’s Proof finish, the finest minting finish for commemorative coins.
