A Next Generation Fighter Plane - the Lightning II
When the Royal Air Force was founded in 1918, The Royal Mint struck the first medals that paid tribute to the brave men and women of the early RAF and First World War. Now, 100 years later, the RAF is recognised around the world for innovation and we are proud to join their centenary celebrations, striking five coins for a collection that marks this important milestone. Like the Spitfire, honoured in the second coin of this series, the Lightning II is a feat of engineering and the focus of the last coin in the collection. But it is the future of the RAF, representing its pioneering spirit and the perfect choice for the last coin in the collection.
The reverse of the coin sees two artists, brothers Richard and Neil Talbot, bring their complimentary skills together to capture the extraordinary design of the Lightning II. This edition of the £2 coin has been struck in 22 carat gold and finished to Proof standard. The accompanying booklet has been produced in collaboration with the RAF and includes insight from a test pilot of the next generation fighter plane.
