The Wings of the Royal Air Force on a Silver Piedfort
Through time, The Royal Mint has proudly honoured the brave men and women of the nation’s Armed Forces, commemorating those moments in the nation’s history when the country has called upon these courageous people. This year we are delighted to join the RAF in their centenary celebrations, striking the coins that will mark this important milestone.
The first coin in the collection to be released was created by Royal Mint graphic designer Rhys Morgan. Rhys was inspired by the badge of the RAF, which features the famous motto ‘Per Ardua Ad Astra’, meaning ‘Through Adversity to the Stars’. It will remind all who see it of the courageous and pioneering spirit of the Air Force. This piedfort edition has been struck in double the thickness of sterling silver as the standard £2 coin. Each coin has been finished to Proof standard and comes with a booklet that has been produced in partnership with the RAF.
