The Pride of the Skies Celebrated in Gold
The Royal Mint has a long history of honouring the courageous men and women of the nation’s Armed Forces. We have struck the medals that pay tribute to the brave and continue to commemorate the important moments in British military history. In 2018, we are proud to mark the centenary of the Royal Air Force with an exciting new series that begins with a coin featuring the badge of the RAF, a proud symbol for so many.
Rhys Morgan, a member of The Royal Mint’s Graphic Design team, was inspired by the RAF badge for this, his very first UK coin design. The design features the famous motto ‘Per Ardua Ad Astra’ meaning ‘Through Adversity to the Stars’, embodying the spirit of the Royal Air Force. This edition of the £2 coin has been struck in 22 carat gold and finished to Proof standard. It comes with a booklet that has been produced in collaboration with the RAF.
