The first modern pound coin, or 'round pound', entered circulation on 21 April 1983. It featured a Royal Arms design by Eric Sewell and bore the Latin inscription DECUS ET TUTAMEN - 'An ornament and a safeguard' - on its milled edge. After 30 years in circulation the 'round pound' had become vulnerable to sophisticated counterfeiters. The new 12-sided £1 coin has been hailed as the most secure coin in the world. Its state-of-the-art security features include its 12-sided shape and bimetallic composition and appearance, as well as a latent feature and micro-lettering on the reverse. This coin is struck in 916.7 yellow gold, enhanced with red gold and finished to Proof standard.
