We Love The Gruffalo

We Love The Gruffalo!

The Gruffalo has been voted one of Britain’s best-loved stories, with thousands of parents reading the tale to their children each evening. The story is perfect to share as little ones snuggle up, listening to every word as the tiny mouse turns the tables on some hungry creatures and the ‘scary’ monster! We have lots of Gruffalo fans here at The Royal Mint, so there was great excitement when we found out that we would be bringing the characters to life on the nation’s coins. Some of The Royal Mint team members responsible for the Gruffalo coins have shared their own stories of cosy bedtimes (and, it seems, being amateur voice artists!).

“We love the Gruffalo book in our house. It’s beautifully illustrated with lots of fun things for our daughter to point out, and the rhythmic flow of the story sets a lovely warm, cosy and fun tone which is perfect for wind-down at bedtime. It’s a true modern classic that we will enjoy for years.”

“Every evening I find myself either reading the Gruffalo or watching the animated film with my 3-year-old daughter. It’s the only story we’ve found that gets her sitting attentively and listening as opposed to running around and getting excited. The book itself is such a simple story, the characters and the writing make me try to mimic the voices from the film and bring the book to life for my little girl (I can’t help it!). She’s a big fan of all Julia Donaldson’s stories and manages to spot the Gruffalo character hidden in her other books, thanks to Axel’s illustrations.”

“For me the Gruffalo sums up bedtime for my children. We all know all the words. My daughter knew the words not long after she started talking and certainly before she could read. It’s something I could read to them again and again without ever getting bored. I have an amazing video of my children telling the story with me and it always makes me smile. Memories to cherish!”

“I love the Gruffalo! The witty story demonstrates in simple execution that even the most threatening monsters are not always as scary as they seem. The Gruffalo is misunderstood - don’t judge a ‘monster’ by first appearance. The mouse demonstrates how feared he is to the other animals with his confidence and apparent toughness – it’s a great message for kids!”

“I think the story does an amazing job of portraying the Gruffalo as a monster but in a way that is fun and endearing. It shows my daughter that even if you are as small as a mouse you have nothing to be afraid of, it’s the classic story of brains over brawn. My daughter particularly loves the meals that the Gruffalo is said to be eating through the story, ‘Owl Ice-cream, and ‘scrambled snake’ are her personal favourites.”

“I must have read this story a hundred times – my three children just love it! It seems to evolve with them over the years, with them spotting different things and wanting it read in different ways. They like a scarier voice for the Gruffalo these days! I never tire of reading it and my daughter even spent a term learning the words at school for a group performance, which is such a special memory.”
