The Plan that Changed the War

In order to win the war, the Allies had to act decisively. A cross channel invasion was risky, but with a toehold on the mainland they could open a second front and liberate occupied Europe. On 6 June 1944 a huge armada sailed for Northern France. By nightfall, with the beachheads secured, the balance of power had taken a decisive shift.

To mark the 75th anniversary of D-Day, the epic story of the Normandy landings is retold on a commemorative coin. Struck in 925 sterling silver and offered here as a prestigious piedfort edition, Royal Mint graphic designer Stephen Taylor captures the enormity of the operation within the roundel of a coin. A fitting tribute to those who planned and participated in the largest amphibious assault in military history.
