Coins in Cook's Pocket

The Voyage of Discovery by Captain Cook was commissioned by King George III through The Royal Society, in order to improve scientific knowledge as the King believed the knowledge brought wealth through improvements in farming, trade and industry. When the London Gazette newspaper published the news of Captain Cooks death in 1780, the Gazette reported that, "His Majesty [George III], who had already the highest opinion of Captain Cook, shed tears, when Lord Sandwich informed him of his death, and immediately ordered a pension of £300 per annum for his widow." The Royal Mint is pleased to be able to offer you original Gold and Silver coinage from the reign of George III, the Monarch who funded the Voyage of Discovery by Captain Cook.

As our celebration of the 250th anniversary of Captain Cook’s great voyage continues, we talk to Gary Breeze, the artist behind the coin designs. Here Gary reveals more about the inspiration behind the second coin in the series: a design that celebrates Cook’s time in Tahiti, where the great explorer was tasked with observing the Transit of Venus.
