Peter Rabbit™ 2019 UK 50p Gold Proof Coin
Beatrix Potter wrote and illustrated 23 little tales, each one inspired by the British countryside – the place where she lived and loved. Her tales were inhabited by different characters based on animals she would see in the countryside, including the world-famous Peter Rabbit.
Loved by children and adults alike, this brave but naughty rabbit appears in six of Potter’s tales and was based upon a real pet rabbit that Beatrix Potter owned. In one of her personal editions of Peter Rabbit, Potter wrote an inscription dedicated to ‘poor old Peter Rabbit, who died on the 26th of January 1901. … An affectionate companion and a quiet friend.’
We first started celebrating the life and work of Beatrix Potter in 2016, in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of her birth, and it is no surprise that Peter Rabbit is one of the most popular characters in the collection. Since then we have released a new Peter Rabbit coin every year and we are excited to release a new Peter Rabbit coin for 2019. Each detail has been captured and this design depicts Peter Rabbit in his trademark jacket, carefully engraved by Royal Mint coin designer Emma Noble.
