Through the Looking-Glass

Through the Looking glass

2021 marks the 150th anniversary of the publication of Through the Looking-Glass, the highly anticipated sequel to the universally adored Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Written by Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under his better-known pen name Lewis Carroll, the story follows Alice on another unique and epic adventure into Looking-Glass House, where everything seems rather backwards and logic is turned on its head. The narrative continues with a stream of playful nonsense, no better epitomised than by two of the book’s most iconic characters, Tweedledum and Tweedledee. The twins feature on the coin design, which is based on an original illustration by Sir John Tenniel that was used in the first publication of Through the Looking-Glass. Available as a one ounce and quarter-ounce gold Proof coin, a half-ounce silver Proof coin, a one ounce colour-printed silver Proof coin, a standard Brilliant Uncirculated edition, and a colour-printed Brilliant Uncirculated edition, this coin is a wonderful tribute to one of the most imaginative tales in literary history.

ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND

Historic Highlight

1865 Sovereign. Issued in the same year 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' was first published.

Commemorate the publication of one of the worlds most well-loved novels to have been written by English author Lewis Carroll.

This coin was minted in the same year that the original 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' was first published and would have been used in circulation at that time.

The coin depicts the 'young head' portrait by William Wyon, one of the most celebrated engravers in the history of The Royal Mint responsible for some of the most iconic coins to ever have been struck including the famous 'Una and the Lion'.

The reverse features Jean Baptise Merlen's shield design that was minted for Queen Victoria between 1838 and 1887 and depicts a shield, adorned with a crown and a wreath. The conjoined rose, thistle and shamrock represent England, Scotland and Ireland. Up to 54 different die's were used to strike the sovereigns of 1865. You can see the die number on the reverse in the space below the wreath. The die in the image used is number 24.
