Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is a truly original literary masterpiece and timeless tale made for the imagination. In 2021, Lewis Carroll’s story about an inquisitive young girl called Alice will be celebrated on a UK coin for the very first time. Created in collaboration with the V&A, this coin is exclusively brought to you from The Royal Mint’s Treasury of Tales. Made for both adults and children alike, Alice’s mind-bending trip into Wonderland is a classic example of literary nonsense, a popular form of writing in the mid-nineteenth century. What’s more, the book has never been out of print since its first publication in 1865. Whilst Carroll’s words weave endless possibilities for our imagination, graphic humorist and political cartoonist Sir John Tenniel provided charming illustrations that helped bring the story to life – one of which features on the reverse design for this coin. This wonderful tribute to one of the most imaginative tales in literary history is a coin that can serve as a treasured keepsake for ardent fans of the book, or even the perfect ‘unbirthday’ gift for a friend or loved one to start or add to their collection.

ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND

Historic Highlight

1865 Sovereign. Issued in the same year 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' was first published.

Commemorate the publication of one of the worlds most well-loved novels to have been written by English author Lewis Carroll.

This coin was minted in the same year that the original 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' was first published and would have been used in circulation at that time.

The coin depicts the 'young head' portrait by William Wyon, one of the most celebrated engravers in the history of The Royal Mint responsible for some of the most iconic coins to ever have been struck including the famous 'Una and the Lion'.

The reverse features Jean Baptise Merlen's shield design that was minted for Queen Victoria between 1838 and 1887 and depicts a shield, adorned with a crown and a wreath. The conjoined rose, thistle and shamrock represent England, Scotland and Ireland. Up to 54 different die's were used to strike the sovereigns of 1865. You can see the die number on the reverse in the space below the wreath. The die in the image used is number 24.
