Store, organise, display and enjoy your coin collection to its fullest.

Having a collection of coins is very rewarding and with proper care, you can look forward to enjoying your coins for many years. Here are some tips to keep your coins in optimum condition.

1. Don’t touch your coins with bare hands

Even the cleanest of fingers have oils in the skin that will leave permanent marks on some coins. Use gloves to be confident that you are handling your coins with care.

2. Be careful what you store your coins in

Some paper envelopes or plastic wallets are made of materials that contain acids from manufacturing processes. This can cause reactions with metals, including turning silver, green. Unfortunately, you will only find out if the packaging has damaged your coins when it’s too late. Acid-free envelopes or special plastic coin ‘flips’, two-sided coin wallets, will protect your coins more effectively.

3. Consider investing in a coin cabinet

Even better than using acid-free paper envelopes to protect your coins is a purpose-built coin cabinet. These cabinets have trays with cutout holes in them so you can place your coins in safely and view them conveniently. However, you need to take care when choosing a cabinet. Some cabinets are made out of plywood and are held together with low-quality glues that give off fumes that can affect your coins. Again, you wouldn’t be able to tell the effect that this type of cabinet can have on your coins until it’s too late. Be wise and invest in a quality coin cabinet from an experienced and reputable supplier.

4. Enjoy every detail through a loupe

With your coins safely protected you may want to look at their magnificent detail. Many collectors invest in a loupe, a special jeweller’s magnifying glass, to observe the close-up detail of the coin and its design elements. In the same way that photography relies on high-quality lenses to produce the best pictures, to see the detail on your coins you need a high-quality loupe. Opt for glass rather than plastic lenses which can easily smudge and scratch. Look for a loupe with 10x magnification and a good quality construction. You may be surprised at how much you will use it.
