A Symbol of Hope Struck in Silver – the Sea King
For centuries The Royal Mint has been proud to play a role in honouring the nation’s Armed Forces, and the important moments in history when the country has needed to call upon these courageous men and women. In 2018, we join the RAF100 celebrations, striking a series of coins that mark 100 years of pioneering aviation. The focus of the fourth coin in the series is the Sea King, a technologically advanced Search and Rescue aircraft that has ignited hope in the heart of many in need since it entered service in 1978.
The reverse design depicts the helicopter hoisting a person in difficulty to safety, reminding us of the life-saving service the RAF provides, in addition to the defending roles of iconic planes like the Vulcan. Each detail designed by brothers Richard and Neil Talbot is enhanced by the sterling silver coin’s superior Proof finish. This limited edition UK £2 coin is presented in packaging created in partnership with the RAF and includes a booklet featuring a quote from former Sea King pilot, His Royal Highness The Duke of Cambridge.
