Since her revival for the coinage of Charles II, Britannia has been a constant on Britain’s coinage. The embodiment of a nation, we look to Britannia for reassurance or rally around her in times of celebration. A welcome and familiar presence, each year she is recast in a different guise. For 2018, artist David Lawrence, whose designs include contributions to our five-year series commemorating the centenary of the First World War, adds a weight of gravitas with his classical design inspired by the trappings of Ancient Rome.
