The Royal Mint has been working with children from the school attended by footballing legend Bobby Moore to recreate the legendary pose created when he hoisted the Jules Rimet FIFA World Cup trophy in front of 96,924 fans at Wembley Stadium, 50 years ago.

The children of Buxton School (previously known as Tom Hood School) in Leytonstone were pleased and proud to participate in recreating the image – a familiar one to football fans across the world. In place of the 1966 World Cup trophy, the young fans used an official 1966 FIFA World Cup England™ 2016 Alderney £5 Coin, struck by The Royal Mint in collaboration with the Football Association to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the event.

“Having a coin to mark 50 years since England won the World Cup is a brilliant way of celebrating the anniversary,” says Martin Glenn, chief executive of The Football Association. “Not just because it honours Bobby Moore, but also because it features Her Majesty the Queen, now in her 90th year, who is Patron of The FA – and who presented Bobby Moore with the Jules Rimet World Cup trophy on that famous afternoon in July 1966.”

In a recent visit to The Royal Mint to strike a gold edition of the coin, Stephanie Moore said: “I’m sure Bobby would have been proud to see a coin created in honour of the team, and it’s a great way of raising vital funds and awareness of the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK’s work to beat bowel cancer.”

Anne Jessopp, The Royal Mint’s Director of Commemorative Coin, said: “The Royal Mint has commemorated events and occasions of national significance on Britain’s coinage for centuries. Fifty years on, it is lovely to see children from Bobby Moore’s school contributing to the celebration of this landmark sporting victory by posing with the special 1966 FIFA World Cup England™ 2016 coin with such enthusiasm.”

The coin is struck in Brilliant Uncirculated finish, and is also available in limited numbers struck to Proof standard in either 22 carat gold or 925 sterling silver from The Royal Mint’s website www.royalmint.com. A donation from each coin purchased will be made to the Bobby Moore Fund, remembering the 1966 cup-winning captain and supporting Cancer Research UK’s pioneering research into bowel cancer.
