Seven year-old designs

The Queen’s 90th birthday year is likely to be more memorable than most for youngster Thomas Howard. The 7 year-old Primary School pupil has beaten off fierce competition from school children across South Wales to have the honour of designing both sides of The Royal Mint’s ‘Queen’s 90th Birthday medal’, the first strike of which will be presented to Her Majesty to wish her a very happy 90th birthday year.

The second strike of the special bronze medal has been presented to Thomas by Chief Executive and Deputy Master of The Royal Mint, Adam Lawrence, when Thomas and his family were able to see how and where his medal was made. His school, Llanyrafon Primary, will receive its own edition of the medal as a memento of Thomas’ achievement, and his class will be invited to join a schools workshop at The Royal Mint Experience – the organisation’s brand new family friendly visitor attraction in Llantrisant, South Wales - as part of the prize.

The Royal Mint Museum’s Education Manager, Lucy-Ann Pickering said: “We would like to thank the primary school children of South Wales for their overwhelming response to this competition – over 2000 entries were received and reflected a very high standard of imagination and creativity.”

The 5 runners up received certificates and a Queen’s 90th Birthday Silver Proof Coin from The Royal Mint’s range of collectable commemorative coins to mark the national celebration. As a special gesture to those whose designs were of a particularly high standard, a further 30 entrants received certificates of commendation.
