The Royal Mint’s family-friendly visitor attraction, The Royal Mint Experience, was opened officially today by two very special Rio 2016 Team GB guests from Wales.

Welsh swimming sensation and Rio 2016 double Olympic Silver Medallist, Jazz Carlin and Welsh Rio 2016 Men’s Rugby Sevens Olympic Silver Medallist, Sam Cross took time out of their busy training schedules to attend the ceremony.

Together the Rio 2016 stars released 650 £1 coins from a specially made container, revealing a plaque announcing that The Royal Mint Experience is officially open.

The new attraction gives visitors first-hand knowledge of how coins are made, from initial design to first strike of the coin press, while a series of static and interactive exhibitions brings the 1,000-year-old organisation’s rich heritage to life.

On display, visitors can find fascinating objects such as the incredibly rare trial piece for the Edward VIII Sovereign, and the equally rare 1933 penny.

Since its initial opening in May, the fun family attraction has already welcomed over 40,000 visitors of all ages, including school groups who can book to spend time at a Royal Mint Experience workshop in one of its specially designed educational suites.

The Royal Mint Experience is based at Llantrisant, off Junction 34 of the M4. Tickets for the factory tour are available to pre book here.
