Staff from The Royal Mint in Llantrisant have raised nearly £25,000 for the Cardiff-based leading national cancer charity, Cancer Research Wales.

Employees of the UK’s oldest manufacturing organisation, along with some of its loyal suppliers, have shown their ongoing support and held nearly 40 different fundraising activities since Cancer Research Wales was nominated by employees as The Royal Mint’s ‘Charity of the Year’ partner two years ago.

As well as silent auctions, coin amnesties, bag collections and cake sales, The Royal Mint also supported staff to volunteer for the charity through the ‘Give a Day’ corporate community day scheme, encouraging its own employees to take a day out of the office to support Cancer Research Wales in its shops and fund-raising schemes.

Individuals’ initiatives included a trek up Mount Kilimanjaro and a Royal Mint golf day, whilst other members of the Mint workforce donned running shoes to hit the marathon trail in support of the charity. Passion for the charity’s cause did not stop with staff directly employed with the organisation, as over £12,000 of the final amount was contributed by kind-hearted Royal Mint suppliers.

Cancer Research Wales has raised many millions of pounds for research into the treatment and diagnosis of cancer since its formation in 1966, funded by a combination of donations, fundraising events and award-winning charity shops. The charity aims to reduce the impact of cancer through supporting world class cancer research and education, giving hope to the people of Wales and their families.

Laura Priddle, Fundraising Manager at Cancer Research Wales, said “We’re so extremely grateful for the wonderful support of staff at the Royal Mint. Their phenomenal donations and hard work has helped us to fund our research projects taking place right here in Wales.”

The Royal Mint’s Chief Executive, Adam Lawrence said, “We are delighted at the enthusiasm and generosity shown by The Royal Mint staff and employees working for our suppliers in fundraising for Cancer Research Wales during the time that it has been our charity partner. From ambitious efforts such as expeditions to Mount Kilimanjaro and Director-level dunkings at a staff fun day, to simple office-based raffles, it just goes to show that a little effort really does go a long way!”
