On thin ice
The preservation of the environment and the protection of Earth’s wildlife has become a great concern to all the countries of the world. For almost 50 years WWF has been protecting the future of nature and in celebration of their great work, the Royal Mint has struck a series of commemorative medals. This medal focuses on the polar bear.

An extract of a quote by Max Nicholson, one of the founders of WWF features on the medal. ‘WWF is not just about saving whales and tigers and rainforests, and preventing pollution and waste, but is inescapably concerned with the future conduct, welfare and happiness and indeed survival of mankind on this planet.’
The polar bear, the world’s largest meat-eating land animal, is vulnerable to the effects of a warming climate. Research shows that the summer sea ice, which the polar bear relies on to hunt, could disappear within a generation. We're urgently tackling climate change before it's too late for this and many other species.
You can support WWF's efforts to safeguard the polar bear by adopting a group of bears in the Arctic islands of Svalbard - see wwwf.org.uk/polarbearmedal.
