The gift of silver thrills everyone. A silver coin struck to impeccable quality by the Royal Mint makes one to treasure forever. For all our special occasions this year the new silver £5 coin beautifully presented would make an ideal gift or simply a wonderful surprise for your family’s younger ones.

In its reverse design specially created for 2010 the coin marks a crucial episode in British history when in 1660 Cromwell’s republican rule was abandoned in favour of a restored monarchy under Charles II. It was a milestone that led to the great constitutional monarchy that survives to this very day.

Being a legal tender coin of the UK the obverse features the portrait of the present monarch Queen Elizabeth II.

The British Monarchy

The British monarchy can trace its roots to the Anglo-Saxon kings. Its remarkable continuity was interrupted only once when Civil War brought about a short republican rule led by Oliver Cromwell. Monarchy was restored in 1660 and it is this crucial period in British Royal history that is commemorated on the 2010 £5 coin.

St Edward’s Crown

St Edward’s Crown named for Edward the Confessor whose crown it replaced is perhaps the most potent symbol of the British monarchy. The crown re-made for Charles II was likely created with gold from the original and this crown remains the centrepiece of the royal regalia today.
