The New Definitive Designs

Matthew Dent chose the Royal Arms, and in particular the shield of the Royal Arms, as the theme for his innovative range of new designs. The Royal Arms are divided into 4 parts: England being represented by the 3 lions passant guardant in the first and fourth quarters, Scotland by the lion rampant in the second with the harp of Ireland in the third. All 4 quarters are spread over the 6 coins from the 1p to the 50p. Completing the new range of coins is the £1 coin featuring the shield of the Royal Arms in its entirety, uniting the 6 elements into one design.

2009 UK Robert Burns £2 Coin

Robert Burns' most famous work is perhaps Auld Lang Syne, a song celebrating friendship and sung every year on New Year's Eve in the English-speaking world. Words taken from Auld Lang Syne, as written down by Burns 'from an old man's singing', now provide a splendid reverse design for the £2 coin marking the 250th anniversary of his birth.

2009 UK Charles Darwin £2 Coin This commemorative £2 coin, designed by Suzie Zamit, celebrates the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin as well as the 150th anniversary of the publication of On the Origin of Species. The reverse of the coin features a profile portrait of Charles Darwin and a chimpanzee together with the denomination TWO POUNDS, the dates 1809 and 2009 and DARWIN.

2009 UK Kew Gardens 50p Coin In 1759 Princess Augusta devoted a few acres of her gardens to a 'Physic Garden' where rare and unusual plants were cultivated for study. It was the beginning of Kew's role as a worldleader in plant science. The 250th anniversary of the founding of Kew Gardens is celebrated in 2009 with a splendid commemorative 50p coin. For the reverse, artist Christopher Le Brun has chosen to feature Kew's famous Chinese Pagoda.
