Reflecting on the cost of war

With a moving silver five-ounce coin

The series of five-ounce coins that take us on a journey from the start of the war in 1914 to its end in 1918 continues with the fourth coin in the series. This 999 fine silver coin, with a design by acclaimed sculptor Philip Jackson, looks back to the events of 1917 when vital progress was made in the face of adversity during a brutal war.

Renowned sculptor Philip Jackson has created a moving design for this five-ounce coin. The laurel wreath represents victory, while the addition of oak leaves is inspired by the poetry of Rudyard Kipling, symbolising Britain and ‘home’. This is balanced by a solitary figure standing in silent reflection as a poignant reminder of the human cost of war.

The coin is dated 2017 to mark 100 years on from the third year of the First World War. This series is endorsed by Imperial War Museums, who have supplied specially sourced imagery for the accompanying booklet, which also reveals more on the artist’s inspiration. Just 450 in 999 fine silver editions, finished to Proof standard, will be struck.
