Celebrate the End of an Era and a Fresh Chapter

The first modern pound coin entered circulation on 21 April 1983 – Her Majesty The Queen's birthday. The coin featured a Royal Arms design by Eric Sewell and bore the Latin inscription DECUS ET TUTAMEN – ‘An ornament and a safeguard’ – taken from Virgil’s Aeneid, on its milled edge.

Over the next 33 years the round pound became a familiar sight in the nation’s change, carrying 24 circulating designs created by eight different designers. The winning design for the new 12-sided £1 coin, created by David Pearce, combines the traditional floral emblems of the four nations, symbolising modern Britain in a fresh and elegant way.
