A beautiful silver coin for the last Stuart queen and first queen of Britain

The official £5 coin for 2014, commemorating Queen Anne

Artistic and cultural advancement, political stability and the uniting of Britain – all achievements of the influential Queen Anne. For 2014 The Royal Mint proudly strikes a £5 coin honouring Anne’s life and legacy, adorned with a portrait by Mark Richards and now available in sterling silver enhanced by The Royal Mint’s unrivalled Proof finish. Just 3,100 of the stunning coins will be available in this limited edition presentation, housed in an attractive case with beautifully illustrated booklet that reveals numismatic tales from Anne’s reign.

About the coin

Sculptor Mark Richards FRBS – also creator of the design for the £5 coin struck for the wedding of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge – has captured the style and refinement of the Queen Anne period in an eighteenth-century style miniature portrait, recalling an age of elegance. The details of his design gleam in this sterling silver coin’s exquisite Proof finish.

The beautifully illustrated leaflet that accompanies this impressive £5 coin has been prepared with the help of the experts at The Royal Mint Museum. It explores both Anne’s reign and stories that will delight collectors, including the tale of how bullion captured from Spanish treasure ships was transformed into what are now very rare coins.

Pleasing design

By M,

While I would have preferred that the Royal Mint had faithfully re-created the design of Queen Anne's silver Crown coinage for this anniversary, but since I admire Mark Richard's work, I had second look at the coin and placed an order for the silver proof example. I was also attracted by the low quantity numbers as there hasn't been such a low mintage for a British silver crown in four figures since 1936 - this may end up as being a key coin to have in modern British Crown collections - time will tell!
