On 27 July 2012 the eyes of the world will turn to London for the start of the Olympic Games. Anticipation is growing by the day as the London 2012 Games will go down in history as one of the biggest and most celebrated sporting events ever. To commemorate this landmark occasion the Royal Mint has struck an Official Olympic Silver Piedfort Coin.

Piedfort coins are traditionally struck on double-thickness blanks of sterling silver and are twice the weight of their standard UK counterpart, making them all the more desirable. Each Official Olympic £5 Silver Piedfort Coin is struck to glorious Proof quality and subject to stringent minting limits of just 7,000 pieces. Housed in an attractive case displaying the London 2012 emblems, the presentation is complete with a Certificate of Authenticity guaranteeing the coin’s specifications.

The Official Olympic Coin

The Olympic coin design by Saiman Miah features the London skyline and the River Thames within a central circle. Iconic buildings depicted include Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, the Gherkin, St Paul’s Cathedral, the London Eye and the Tower of London, with London 2012 arching above. The outer ring of the design features pictograms representing various Olympic sports which are synonymous with the London 2012 Games.

‘As an architecture student I wanted to include a detailed impression of London’s iconic skyline on my design,’ says Saiman. ‘The pictograms of Olympic athletes placed around the edge is like a clock face,’ he explains, ‘and a reference to another London icon, Big Ben. Winning the Olympic Coin competition is a dream come true.’

A true treasure

As I have no chance of getting an Olympic Ticket in any final for each of my 3 children, this purchase will be, by far the most rewarding. The design is imaginative with clear and precise detail. The box is well made and looks expensive.
